Being self-aware is a skill that most assume is common, but in most cases, it needs to be cultivated. Having a strong sense of self-awareness will allow you to develop as a person. You can take this development and apply it to both your personal and professional lives. If you are looking for some tools that will generate meaningful progress, we can help.
1. Create a Thought Diary
Your thoughts are little windows to the soul of your inner self. Using a diary, you can start your journey of self-discovery and track your progress towards self-awareness. In this book, you should write down any and all thoughts that you have when a sudden reaction has been elicited. Not only should you write down your thoughts, but it is also important to record what triggered those thoughts. This can be an event, an emotion, or even a scent. Give a number to the level of emotional response you experienced. Over time, you can track triggers and determine a cause for many of your actions.
2. Take the Self Consciousness Scale Test
This test has been around since 1985. It is also available in a variety of languages. The point is to help the test taker to better understand their rumination levels. Once you understand your level of self-consciousness, you will then be able to actively shift this perspective into objective reflection. One of the biggest hurdles to developing true self-awareness is a simple lack of understanding of how to change your inner thinking.
3. Make Use of Open-Ended Questions
Becoming self-aware or building on your existing level of awareness won’t happen overnight. It takes time and effort to get to a point of true balance. In order to make progress, you need to make an objective reflection on a continual basis. Applying this to a real-world setting is not always easy, but asking open-ended questions is a great place to start. This may be a healthy risk in terms of allowing others to push their views forward while yours take a back seat. However, using opened ended questions will allow you to reflect on your thoughts and reactions more effectively.
4. Use The Situational Self-Awareness Scale
This scale will help you to quantify your level of private awareness and your level of public awareness. There are two sub-scales included that will further help you to understand the differences and validate them according to unique cues. Many researchers and scientists also use this tool when studying the human condition, but is extremely helpful when looking to build true self-awareness.
Until next time,
Be well.
