Speaking the Unspoken: Symbolic Loss and Grief in Medicine

Grief is an inherent part of experiencing unexpected loss, and it doesn't always involve the death of a loved one. The emotional and psychological journey individuals go through after losing a loved one also applies to other types of loss. These losses, which involve significant life changes, are known as symbolic losses. However, society often overlooks the need for grieving these non-death-related losses, leaving individuals without proper support.
Examples of symbolic losses in the veterinary profession may include unexpected career changes, pet loss, divorce, financial struggles (high debt load), loss of friendships, loss of colleagues, relocation, or the loss of a home, foreclosure, among many others. Some of us have experienced many of the above losses during our lives and struggled through the stages of grief silently, without access to the proper support. Depending on the individual, type of loss, and a particular type of loss, the length of the grief process will be highly variable.
For example, I have experienced recovery times of up to one and a half to two years for a job loss. So, know that you are not alone, your feelings matter, your grief is normal, and you will get through it.
In every profession, particularly in the medical field, veterinarians and other medical staff may collectively experience overwhelming emotions, burnout, a sense of invisibility, and different burdensome feelings often intertwined with grief. Although difficult to navigate, acknowledging and addressing these complex emotions can be crucial for the overall well-being of veterinary professionals.
