Why Trust Matters

One of the most important aspects of any relationship is trust. This goes for romantic relationships, friendships, family relationships, and even work relationships! Being trustworthy isn’t all that difficult, but you do have to be sure you want to do it.
People want to be around those they can trust, and although it’s a simple thing to be trustworthy, it is not all that common. There are lots of ways you can demonstrate your trustworthiness, but let’s focus on three of them (in no particular order).
Do What You Say You Will Do
A great way to demonstrate your trustworthiness is by following through on your commitments. When you tell someone you will do something, be sure to do it. Sometimes, there are extenuating circumstances, and most people will accept those if you absolutely cannot follow through. But those are rare. If you tell a friend you will meet them for lunch at 1:00, show up on time! If you are running late, let them know that and tell them why. Your friend is much more likely to understand that your boss wouldn’t stop talking or that you got stuck behind a train than if you simply say, “Sorry, I’m running late.” Or even worse, if you don’t show up at all!
Maintain Integrity
Another way you can demonstrate your trustworthiness is through maintaining integrity. You do not have to be brutally honest, but try you are best to speak in a way that is not hurtful. A good friend will appreciate it in the long run, even if it bugs them at first.
Do NOT Have Loose Lips
One more way that you can demonstrate your trustworthiness is by refraining from talking about others. It can be tempting to gossip, but when you do that, it could plant a seed inside your friends’ minds that you may be talking about them behind their backs too. When people feel that others should not trust you, they often feel they should not trust you either.
Treat People How You Want To be Treated
These are not the only ways to demonstrate your trustworthiness, but they are some very important ones. Being trustworthy will draw people to you, and they will want to stick around because honestly, trustworthiness can be hard to find.
Until next time,
Be well.
